Fibroids in the uterus are the most common noncancerous, or benign, tumors in women of childbearing age. They are also named leiomyomas and myomas. Many people have fibroids with no specific symptoms, whereas somebody experiences pain, bleeding, or both.
This article will give a brief overview of fibroids, including their types, effects on the body, causes, and treatment options.

Uterine fibroids are typically the growths in or on the walls of the uterus.
A woman may have one or multiple fibroids. They can be small like an apple seed or big like a grapefruit (or sometimes even larger than that). They can also grow over time.
Fibroids are generally observed from age 30. They usually shrink after menopause.
It is not clear exactly why they form, but they normally develop when estrogen levels are higher.
Uterine fibroids are almost always noncancerous. However, uterine fibroids can present similarly in urinary sarcomas, which is a rare form of cancer called leiomyosarcoma.

Types –

There are three main types of fibroid, which are:

a. Subserosal fibroids: These are the most common type. They grow on the external part of the uterus.

b. Intramural fibroids: These grow inside the muscular wall of the uterus.

c. Submucosal fibroids: These grow into the open space inside the uterus.

Some fibroids can become pedunculated fibroids, which means that the fibroid has a branch that attaches to the uterus.

Symptoms :

a. heavy periods, also known as menorrhagia, which can lead to anemia
b. painful periods
c. lower backache or leg pain
d. discomfort or a feeling of fullness in the lower abdomen, especially in the case of large fibroids

Causes :

a. If estrogen levels are high, fibroids tend to swell.
b. Low estrogen levels lead to the shrinkage of fibroids.

d. Overweight and obesity
